why waste all that good rain water? 

Cisterns are large underground tanks that hold potable water or gather rainwater or runoff from roofs. They're a lifesaver in areas where water is hard to come by. When it rains, they scoop up the water and hold onto it until you need it for things like feeding your house, watering plants or flushing toilets.
