Septic tanks are underground systems that handle wastewater in places without sewers. They separate the solid waste (poo) from the liquid (poo and pee water), with solids sinking to form sludge and lighter stuff floating up as scum. The partially cleaned liquid then flows out through an effluent filter to a drain field, where it gets naturally filtered and absorbed into the soil.
